Ubisoft Montreal has taken us on another epic journey, this time, across a civil war ridden America, with a new protagonist in their latest release Assassin’s Creed 3.
Don’t let the documented ’3′ at the end of the title fool you, this is in fact the fifth game in the series (excluding portable consoles), die hard fans of the series will recall both Brotherhood and Revelations which continued to wet the appetites of it’s fans while they awaited another full scale game.
What many fans of the series were beginning to get concerned about was the ageing graphics reappearing in title after title however, these concerns may be laid to rest with stunning visuals and an almost L.A Noire quality to the facial animations; cut scenes are utterly beautiful and it’s very difficult to find fault in the dialogue.
Game-play has leaped forward from the days of what was essentially turn by turn fighting. The swordplay or even ‘tomahawk-play’ are both excellent and the game has gained a much more violent edge than it’s predecessors which is an impressive feat in a series based around stabbing people. A brand new addition to the series, naval battles, are also really spectacular, the detail put into the sea waves and rogue winds make it a very engaging and far from laborious activity.
With all these terrific improvement, problems still remain. The concept of Desmond is very very good however his game-play, while improved still hinders the immersion of the main quest of Conor. The guards, even with their improved fighting, show sheer stupidity bordering on mentally ill; the man covered in all sorts of weaponry, as the killer of the dead guy lying in front of you. All in all though these really don’t hinder the enjoyment of a truly spectacular game.
Pros: Outstanding story, terrific game-play and vastly improved graphics.
Cons: Rare bugs, poor AI in places
Overall: A truly terrific experience, lives up to it’s triple A status with ease
